West Lyon EA Extends a Warm Welcome on Thursday

Before the school day began on Thursday, August 30th members of the West Lyon EA gathered in the school’s Media Center for coffee cake, fresh fruit, coffee and conversation. West Lyon Community Schools are made up of the communities of Largewood, Inwood, Alvord, and Lester. I could almost see both the states of South Dakota and Minnesota from here! It was a beautiful early morning drive past the fields of corn and soybeans as well as very large dairy farms.

So many members turned out and greeted me saying they had never had an ISEA president visit them, which in return I say, “I think it is about time!” I have always said I will go wherever I’m invited, putting a face on ISEA, seeing the great work they do every day and coming to hear the concerns of members.

West Lyon EA members truly turned out! It was such fun to meet so many educators and learning what they teach and who are the leaders of the association. In addition, local EA leaders arranged for the local newspaper to come for an interview too!

As the school day began, I had the chance to read to several different classes. First up, Mrs. Starrett’s 2nd grade. Mrs.Trish Starrett had made the arrangements for my visit!

Next I was off to Mrs. Person’s 2nd grade. Aren't these children just about the cutest little kiddos you've seen in a long time! Such great listeners too!

Next I was off to Mrs. Lantz’s 3rd grade. Mrs. Lantz and I had first met a year ago when she was recognized as a Nationally Board Certified teacher at Terrace Hill, the Governor of Iowa’s official residence. ISEA teams up with both the Governor’s office and the Iowa Department of Education to recognize the newly Nationally Board Certified teachers in Iowa.

I finished my visit to West Lyon in the 4th grade classroom of Mrs. Kruse. Mrs. Kruse had explained to me over coffee this morning that her students had begun their study of Iowa government and would love to have me visit about my experience serving in the Iowa House (1993-96). They had a good understanding of Iowa government and had terrific questions for me too!

Thanks West Lyon EA members for the great work you do every day on behalf of Team ISEA for Iowa's students!
