On Thursday and Friday, April 3 & 4, nearly 450 Team ISEA members from across the state gathered in Ames at Hilton Coliseum for the 2008 ISEA Delegate Assembly.
The assembly was action packed which included electing a new leadership team of Chris Bern, Knoxville High School Math teacher --ISEA President and Tammy Wawro, Cedar Rapids Mentoring and Induction Facilitator--ISEA Vice-President. The new team begins their term of office on June 15th (for a two-year term).
ISEA Executive Director Jan Reinicke (standing at left) addressed the delegates for her last time on Thursday morning. Jan has announced she is retiring on August 31st after a 28 year career with ISEA, the last 10 as Executive Director.
NEA Directors Jim Young of Cedar Falls and Kathy Williams of Davenport (standing at left in right photo) challenge Team ISEA delegates to contribute to the NEA Fund for Children and Public Education. Under Jim and Kathy's leadership (and the help of the entire ISEA Executive Board) we raised over $8,000 for the NEA Fund! NEA Directors Jim and Kathy also addressed the assembled with their annual NEA Director's report.
Team ISEA honored several throughout the assembly for their commitment to education. State Senator Mike Gronstal was named the 2008 Friend of Education. Senator Gronstal has been a champion for public education and has led efforts to increase funding and expand learning opportunities during his more than 30 years of service in the Legislature.
Floyd Winter, a retired Cedar Falls educator and school administrator who continues to work to expand learning opportunities for students, received the Paul Mann Memorial Human Relations Award. This award, which is named in honor of long-time Des Moines teacher and human rights activist Paul Mann, honors an individual or group for exemplary contributions toward the advancement of human and civil rights.
Jean Swenson, a veteran music teacher from New Hampton, was honored with the Charles F. Martin Award for Association leadership--the top award the Association presents to a member. It is named in honor of Charles F. Martin, the ISEA's president in 1945 who went on to serve as executive director from 1946 to 1961.
Sheryl Traetow, a paraeducator at Hansen Elementary School in Cedar Falls, was presented with the Education Support Professional of the Year for her dedication to supporting teachers, students, and their parents.
One of the highlights for ISEA Retired delegates is the breakfast that Team ISEA hosts for them on Friday morning. ISEA-R delegates are pictured (at left) with Barb Cunningham (first row-left) as their Chair and Joann Mackin (first row-right) ISEA-R staff liaison.
It was my last Delegate Assembly and I didn't do a very good job in holding the tears back. Everyone was extra kind and so generous with their praise. I have much to look forward to as I am heading back to the classroom in the fall, but I shall miss seeing the friends I've made while serving as ISEA President. As I continue to say, "Thanks for all you continue to do as leaders on Team ISEA!"
Special thanks to Barb Cunningham for the photos posted here!

Linda, You will be missed! Your leadership skills, friendship, and willingness to help out I.S.E.A. members and political candidates, will never be forgotten. You were the first to offer your support, volunteering to walk in a parade, door-knocking ( too bad it was raining that night!) and making phone calls, while Bob was campaigning for his second term in the Iowa House. We wish the very best for you!

Linda--
Congratulations on getting through your Delegate Assembly. OEA's is still a couple of weeks away and we have a number of critical issues we will be dealing with.
