Executive Board Hosts Social and Joins State Committee Members for Dinner

On Monday, July 30th after a full day Executive Board meeting, the ISEA Executive Board hosted a social for members of our four state committees prior to Summer Conference on the campus of Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.

Our four state committees are made up of members from each of the 19 UniServ Units + a representative from the following Standing Committees: Retired, Higher Education, Area Education Agencies, and Education Support Professionals.

Board members, committee members and staff liaisons enjoyed conversations and a steak dinner before I called our meeting to order. I shared the goals set earlier in the day by the ISEA Executive Board for the 2007-2008 year: 1) Continue to build membership; 2) Work to implement new education state policy; and 3) Work to make needed changes to the No Child Left Behind Law. The charge to the committees is to have each committee work on all three goals!

All four committee chairs reported out. Larry Stein (at left) chair of Protecting Member Rights was the first to share successes from 2006-2007. Melissa Johnson, chair of Strengthening Local Associations and Tammy Duehr, chair of Building a Better Teaching and Learning Environment (not pictured) each shared the direction they hoped for the coming year.

Finally, Kristi Keast (at right) chair of Building Support for Public Education shared news of the success of our first Lobby Day in recent years and added a listing of the many successes from this past Legislative session.

State committees then met on Tuesday morning, July 31 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to begin their work for the year. Summer Conference was kicked off at 1:00 p.m. later that day!
