Moulton School Visit with DMEA leaders

Today I visited Moulton School (Kindergarten through 8th grade) in Des Moines with DMEA Executive Director Diana Richeson. Diana arranged to have the DMEA treat members and potential members at Moulton to lunch catered in by HyVee. Two of the Moulton staff that joined us were teachers Carolyn Uhlenhake (seated at left) and Claudia Mussell (standing).

I had a chance to visit with 4th/5th grade teacher Cynthia Hunafa (seated at right) about how it feels to be designated as a "School In Need of Assistance" (SNIA). We compared our stories (as my 4th graders hadn't made their AYP in Math one year) of the additional testing and paper work, not to mention the shame brought to individuals, the school and community.

Pictured here are some of the Moulton staff enjoying the rare chance to share a meal together while taking a few moments to set aside checking papers from their normal lunchtime routine and enjoy the company of other adults.
