Norwalk Professional Education Association Kicks Off School Year

President Al Hart of the Norwalk Professional Education Association kicked off the 2006-2007 school year with an Association hosted luncheon on Thursday, August 31st. Al (pictured at left with me) and the leadership team of the NPEA had an agenda packed luncheon for the over 100 members that gathered. In addition to the remarks I made, the NPEA members heard from NEA ValueBuilders, Horace Mann, and UniServ Director Wayne Bauman. Leadership also presented two skits--one on what not to do/to do when using personal days and the other skit topic was on what not to do/to do on the issue of sexual harrassment. It was a terrific way to start the school year!

One of the first members I met in Norwalk on Thursday was Wes Day (pictured here with President Al Hart). Wes shared with me that he was the president of the Maine Teachers Association in 1977-1978. Wes and his family moved to Iowa in 1990 (tired of the winters in Maine) to teach Math at Norwalk High School. We are lucky to have you, Wes!

President Al announced that the NPEA was at an all-time high of membership with 129 members. Way to go President Al and all members of Team Norwalk!

Lunch in Norwalk on Thursday gave me the chance to reconnect with an all-time favorite of mine, Ann Swenson (pictured in the middle). Ann is beginning her second year of teaching in Norwalk (third year in the profession) and served as Chair of ISEA Student Program in her senior year of college. Ann is an elementary vocal music teacher. Pictured with Ann are two colleagues from her elementary building (from left to right) Krista Krebsbach, Ann, and Amy Shultz. It was exciting to meet both Krista and Amy along with all their enthusiastic colleagues in Norwalk. How lucky the community of Norwalk is to have such an awesome group of educators! Thanks, Team Norwalk for all you do every day for Iowa's students!
