On Tuesday, October 17th the association road took me to Grundy Center. NEIEU UniServ Director Jeremy Kunz picked me up at my motel in Waterloo well before the sun was up and off we traveled to meet with GCEA members over rolls, fresh fruit and juice.
Greeting members as they arrived (pictured from left to right) are Sharon Owens, Kindergarten teacher in North Tama running for the Iowa House; Sue Graham, 2nd grade teacher and co-president of the GCEA; and Unit 2 UniServ Director Cindy Carroll.
Also serving as co-president of the GCEA is Karah Bomgaars (standing at right). Karah is the elementary Guidance Counselor here in Grundy Center and the daughter of long-time EA member from Spencer Steve Bomgaars. I've known Karah's dad for many years as Steve also served on ISEA-PAC Central Committee representing his UniServ Unit. Just as her father, Karah Bomgaars has stepped up to take on a leadership role in the association. It was such a treat to meet this young leader! Pictured with Karah is Grundy Center EA Bargaining Chair and Middle School/High School Band teacher Andrew Van Hooreweghe.
UniServ Director Cindy Carroll and I had a full day of meeting members and getting to see the magic of their classrooms in Grundy Center. The first visit was to 3rd grade teacher Tara Liston room. Ms. Liston had me read from the classroom read aloud, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. Tara and her 3rd graders are pictured at left.
We next dropped in on the 2nd grade classroom of Jackie Hampe. Ms. Hampe's class was involved in reading stations. Pictured at right is Ms. Hampe working with one group of students.
In Sue Graham's 2nd grade class (pictured at left) I read aloud the book Counting on Frank, by Rod Clement (author and illustrator). The second graders loved it! Thanks for your leadership Sue in and out of the classroom!
Two of our classroom visits took us into Mr. Frank Williams' 5th grade Social Studies. Mr. Williams was on jury duty, so unfortunately we didn't get to meet him. His homeroom is pictured here on the right. He has both sections of 5th grade for Social Studies.
Just two more classes to go, then it is lunch time! We next visited the Kindergarten classroom of Jama Johnson. Jama (seated on left) is pictured with her teacher associate and Kindergarten class. I read aloud the book Tops and Bottoms. I always think it is a pretty good "fit" for fall and the harvest time.
The last elementary classroom we visited in Grundy Center was the 4th grade classroom of Kim Petersen. Her 4th graders were just finishing up their timed multiplication test as we awaited our turn. Can you spot Kim in the middle of her 4th graders?!
Finishing our school lunch with staff from the elementary building, we were next off to the Middle/High School. Here we connected with Team ISEA member Mary Ver Ploeg. Mary (pictured on the right) is here with Unit 2 UniServ Director Cindy Carroll. Mary is the High School/ Middle School Guidance Counselor. Mary gave us a great tour through the building, stopping along the way to introduce us to staff. We had a chance to stop and visit with students from Christine Bangasser's 7th grade Reading/Language Arts class and Mr. John Baade's High School World Studies class.
At the end of the school day we got to observe Mr. Andrew Van Hooreweghe's 6th grade Band class. It was just an awesome day! Thanks, co-presidents Karah Bomgaars and Sue Graham for your leadership! You have a great team of leaders and members in the Grundy Center EA! Thanks for all you do every day!
And after a full day in the classroom, educators gathered to support one of our own. Sharon Owens, Kindergarten teacher in North Tama and candidate for Iowa House District 40 (pictured on the left) has joined others gathered to door knock in Grundy Center for her campaign. Joining Sharon (besides me taking the picture) is from right to left, Cindy Carroll, Unit 2 UniServ Director; Andrew Van Hooreweghe, Middle School/High School Band teacher and Chief Negotiator; Jeremy Kunz, NEIEU UniServ Director; Grundy Center 5th grade teacher; and Sharon Owens. We are so proud to have one of own putting herself out on the line to run for office!
