A Quick Snapshot of Longfellow Elementary in Waterloo
On Thursday, October 19th Hawkeye UniServ Director Elwood Thompson picked me up and served as my escort for the school day. Our first elementary school building visit took us to Longfellow Elementary. We were greeted by principal Brad Schweppe (pictured at left) who served as our guide. Principal Schweppe shared how he spent his early education years in Texas, but returned to Iowa. How lucky we are to have his leadership return home!
Our first classroom took me into 5th grade classroom of Mr. Alvin Wright. Mr.Wright gave me the opportunity to review with his students (pictured at right with his class) U.S. geography terms. It was a pleasure to return to the Social Studies classroom! I thanked the students for working hard every day, because we’re counting on them to be the leaders of Waterloo and of Iowa.
I next had the chance to read to Mr. Ken Trautmann’s 4th grade. I love returning to the 4th grade! I shared the read aloud Counting on Frank. It was a perfect fit as the students had just finished a classroom Math game. The picture book has a fun way at looking at the concept of “volume”. While in Mr. Trautmann's room (pictured at left) a reporter and photograhper from the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier were there. Check out what they wrote: http://www.wcfcourier.com/articles/2006/10/20/news/metro/814ded4240c36ae88625720d004e78fd.txt
The last classroom we visited at Longfellow Elementary was Sherry Ellerman’s 4th grade (pictured at right). Thanks, Longfellow educators for all you do every day to provide great opportunities for Iowa’s students!
