On Monday evening, October 2nd the Polk Suburban UniServ Unit and the Des Moines Education Association presented a joint training session for Team ISEA members at CiCi's Pizza in Urbandale. Greeting members as they arrived were Sydney (on left) and Miaja (on right) who presented each person with a "magic wand". Sydney, a 7 year old and in 2nd grade at Oviatt Elementary in Norwalk and Miaja, a 10 year old in 5th grade at Lakewood Elementary in Norwalk happily greeted each and every member and "thanked them for the magic they do every day for Iowa's students".
As Team ISEA members enjoyed their dinner of salads and pizza, Team ISEA recommended candidates briefly addressed the gathering. John Calhoun (pictured on the right) is running for the Iowa House in the North Polk area and took the time to share his vision for Iowa and how we might make progress together in education.
Another terrific ISEA recommended candidate running for office that addressed the group is Merle Johnson. Merle (pictured at the left) is the former Mayor of Ankeny, former School Board Member in Ankeny and a candidate for the Iowa Senate. Merle shared the importance of creating a lifetime of opportunity through education with our members.
Also a part of the training were Team ISEA Lobbyist Brad Hudson and Jon Studer. The duo shared with the nearly 40 gathered the impact policy makers have upon all of us in the community colleges, AEA's and in the Pre-K through 12th grade districts. They shared many ways that members could make a difference in helping elect great friends of education as Merle Johnson and John Calhoun to public office.
The largest group of local EA members to participate were from the Saydel EA (pictured at the right). They came prepared to participate and shared questions and concerns they have regarding both political activity and generating members in their local EA. Thanks Saydel EA for your great participation!
Hats off to Team ISEA UniServ Directors Randy Richardson (shared director Polk Suburban/Lincolnway), Wayne Bauman (Polk Suburban) and Diana Richeson (Des Moines Education Association) for your leadership for the evening and all you do every day!
