A Splendid Morning at Kirkwood Community College

On Monday, February 27th I had the unique opportunity to see first- hand one of Iowa's leading institutions of higher education, Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. I learned that Kirkwood has the third highest enrollment of full time students in higher education for the state of Iowa, only behind University of Iowa and Iowa State University.

One of the first instructors I met was Rick Anderson (pictured at left). Rick gave us a tour of the Arts and Humanities area, taking us into the theater area and behind the stage. Rick was bubbling with enthusiasm as he shared the many opportunites that students have in the Arts and Humanities at Kirkwood. How lucky Kirkwood Community College is to have Rick Anderson on staff and share his passion for the Arts!

Our second stop at Kirkwood was in the area of Communications and Media. Pictured here (second from left) is Rose Kodet; Director of Communications and Media. Rose shared that students at Kirkwood are getting hands on experience in print media (in creating the Communique, the student newspaper), as well as in radio and TV production. Also sharing her expertise is Sarah Wilson (at right in photo) who is the Communique advisor.

Before leaving the Communications Media area, we had the opportunity to visit with Gale Smetana (at left) as she gave us a guided tour of the television studio of "KSP", Kirkwood Student Productions.

There are some awesome opportunites for Iowans at Kirkwood Community College!
