A Final Stop on My Hawkeye UniServ Unit Tour Leads to Hawkeye Community College

Our final stop on my Hawkeye UniServ Unit tour on Wednesday afternoon October 3rd was to Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo.

The Hawkeye Community College Higher Ed-EA Executive Board invited all members to join us for a discussion about education issues. Bea Gobeski, president of the Hawkeye CC HE-EA (pictured at rigft) led our discussion. Bea is an instructor in the Business Department here on the Waterloo campus.

As association members arrived, introductions were made and informal conversations took place.

Our discussion centered around a number of issues, the first being IPERS. Next we moved into the topic of remediation for students not prepared for the community college classroom and the possibility of working with AEA's to extend IEP's for an additional two years.

Another topic discussed was the issue of high schools “supplementing” student course schedules (adding additional classes for rigor) rather than “supplanting” (offering a Community College class at the high school instead of the school offering their own basic courses).

There were other topics, too many to mention...all in all a great discussion. I appreciated the opportunity very much to not only meet our members that provide the great opportunities at one of our many fine Community Colleges, but to hear what issues are important to them!
