Reconnecting With Dedicated Professionals in Humboldt

On Thursday afternoon we topped off our school visits by heading to Humboldt where we were greeted with a school tour of the elementary building. After stopping by a number of classrooms and meeting the great staff, we stopped for a visit in the 5th grade classroom of Kathy Stover (pictured at right).

Kathy and her students gave us an introduction to the "Smart Board". I'll tell you, one cannot be away from a classroom very long and things change quickly! Kathy's class had only had the "Smart Board" in the her classroom for one week, so we called upon her colleague Rachelle Mau (pictured at left) to assist in the demonstration.

The school district has purchased one "Smart Board" per grade level and Michelle's class started the year with the 5th grade board.

They demonstrated so many uses, honestly my head was spinning! It is an exciting teaching/learning tool, but with all new equipment one must have proper In-Service and additional time to practice. It is pretty exciting to see the new innovations used in today's classes!

At the end of the school day the Humboldt EA hosted a reception in the elementary multi-purpose room to have conversation and connect to Team ISEA. A great crowd turned out for delicious home-made goodies and a chance to share how the Humboldt EA is working as an equal partner on quality staff development opportunities as well as the distribution of Teacher Quality salary funds.

Joining us from the Humboldt High School is the Humboldt EA President Brenda Rush (at left). Brenda shared with me how she first worked in the business world while also teaching part-time at the Community College. Because of the passion she felt for working with students, she then worked to become a licensed teacher and has been teaching high school business and economics for less then 10 years.

How fortunate we are for Brenda's leadership in the classroom and in the association! Thanks, Humboldt EA for your hospitality and for the great work you do every day for Iowa's students!
