Lou Henry Elementary Welcomes Visitors

Our fourth school building visit on Tuesday was to Lou Henry Elementary in Waterloo. Lou Henry is named for President Herbert Hoover's wife, Lou Henry. It is a beautiful tribute to a very fine Iowan.

Waterloo EA past president Jean Seeland and Lou Henry Elementary 1st grade teacher greeted us in the school office. Jean serves on the Hawkeye UniServ Unit Executive Board and is a member of the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, the state of Iowa's educator licensing board. Jean gave us a quick tour before picking up her class from their time in the Media Center.

We had a few moments to sit down in Jean's classroom and visit about the school visits we've already had so far today. Pictured here (at right) is Hawkeye UniServ Director Shelly Staker. Shelly had taught 5th grade for many years in Independence before joining the staff of Team ISEA.

I had the chance to get into two classrooms at Lou Henry Elementary. The first classroom was of Mary Farmer's 3rd grade. I read aloud Duck for President. I shared with the class some of the autographs of presidential candidates that had signed my book. We all agreed that being president wouldn't be an easy job!

The last classroom visit of the day was in the 2nd grade homeroom of Mrs. Besh. Mrs. Besh has a student teacher that has been "in charge" for the past two weeks. Pictured here is Ann Preston, University of Northern Iowa student teacher and her 2nd graders. Miss Preston, you were doing a terrific job and we welcome you to the profession!
