A Visit to North Tama Community Schools

On Wednesday afternoon of October 3rd Hawkeye UniServ Director Shelly Staker and I headed to North Tama Schools in Traer. After checking in the office, our first classroom stop was in Connie Courbat's 3rd grade room. Connie is a long-time association leader and Chief Negotiator in North Tama. Connie (on the left) is pictured with her 3rd grade homeroom and teacher associate (on the right) Danielle Andvik.

I shared Chris Van Allsburg's newest book, Probuditi! with the 3rd grade class. The students (and adults) really loved it! This is a great read-aloud book as students get involved in making predicitions and following the patterns.

Next we visited the 7th grade English class of teacher Mrs. Ehlers. I spoke briefly about opportunities I participated in as a volunteer and opened it up to the students to share what they are doing to give back to community. I was very impressed by the variety of opportunities they've had as students to volunteer within the school as well as outside of school in their greater community. Every single student had participated in some sort of voluteer effort. Outstanding job, North Tama 7th graders! Mrs. Ehlers is seated in the front row in pink. Thanks for your leadership, Mrs. Ehlers!

Our final classroom visit in North Tama was to the combined Kindergarten classroom of Kim Howard and Sharon Owens. I read aloud a book Kim had for me about an angry ladybug. Kim is pictured (on the right) with classroom teacher associates and their Kindergarten children.

Thanks, North Tama EA leaders for all you do for Iowa's students!
