Lunch with a Candidate and An Afternoon at Lincoln Elementary in Waterloo

At noon UniServ Directors Elwood Thompson and Jeremy Kunz joined me in having lunch in a downtown Cedar Falls restaurant. We were joined by one of our great ISEA recommended candidates, Doris Kelley. Doris (pictured on the right) brings tremendous business and community experience to her candidacy for the Iowa House. We are proud to stand with Doris Kelley for the Iowa House.

Our afternoon took us to Lincoln Elementary in Waterloo. Lincoln Elementary is one of the newest Waterloo buildings constructed with one cent sales tax revenues. We were greeted as we entered the office by Principal Bob Wright. Principal Bob is an energetic individual that oozes enthusiasm! Serving as our school guide was Tammy Bakken, elementary reading specialist. Tammy is pictured on the left here with Hawkeye UniServ Director Elwood Thompson.

I had the chance to read in a number of classrooms. Regretfully, I didn’t bring enough of my pencils along (gee, I hate when that happens!). I promised classrooms that UniServ Director Thompson would return tomorrow with pencils, enough for all! I first read aloud to Kara McKeen’s 2nd grade. Here (on the right) is Kara and her 2nd graders!

Next I read aloud to Julie Mojer’s 1st grade. Here Julie is pictured with her 1st graders on the left. What a bunch of cutie pies! Loved those kiddos!

I then read to three separate 4th grade classrooms. First came Carmen Stickfory’s homeroom. Ms. Stickfory was absent and pictured here (on the right) with her class is substitute teacher Angela Young.

Our next 4th grade classroom was in Deb Hudson’s homeroom. Pictured (on left) is Deb Hudson and her 4th graders.

Our last 4th grade classroom visit was to Kendall LaFontaine’s homeroom. Ms. Fontaine was absent and subbing and pictured with her class (on the right) is Alicia Dunat.

As the school day ended, staff gathered in the faculty lounge for cookies, apples and conversation. Pictured here is Kathy McCormack, 5th grade Band teacher and Waterloo EA leader. Kathy shared that she serves 3 elementary buildings for band instruction. Kathy will receive one of our six scholarships to the NEA Midwest Regional in Chicago, IL in January of 2007!

Thanks Lincoln EA members for your great work every day for Iowa’s students!
