Governor Culver Signs Safe Schools Legislation

State Senators instrumental in passing landmark legislation gathered at West Des Moines Valley High School on Monday afternoon to participate in a bill signing ceremony by Governor Culver. State Senator Mike Connolly (left) of Dubuque (SD 14) and Senator Matt McCoy of Des Moines (SD 31)have worked tirelessly over the last five years to help pass anti-bullying legislation that was signed into law on March 5th.

Also gathered for the bill signing ceremony to show their support were state Senator Staci Appel (SD 37) of Ackworth (on the left) and Senator Becky Schmitz (SD 45) of Fairfield (on the right) along with Lauren Burt (center) of Governor Culver's office.

Lt. Governor Patty Judge introduces Governor Culver to some four dozen members of the community + the hundreds of students at West Des Moines Valley High School to witness Iowa becoming one of only ten states to have such legislation on the books.

Governor Culver said “The School Anti-Bullying and Anti-Harassment Act creates a new boundary in Iowa classrooms, hallways, and cafeterias. This bill makes it clear Iowans are committed to providing protection against intolerance in every Iowa school. This bill simply says that bullying, threats, intimidation and intolerance have no place in our public education system. It is a real step forward for our state. Now that we have the policy, we must all work together to give our educators and administrators the training and tools necessary to eliminate bullying in our schools forever.”
